The Branding Obsession
Why is it that you can’t just call it “Sunday School,” or “Children’s Church.” Why do churches expect visitors to know what they mean by “Lions” or “Pathfinders” or “Navigators” or — and perhaps the worst yet — “Little Warriors?”
Or “Sundays @ 7,” “Urban River,” “Church @ 137” (that church is going to have a problem if they ever move; 137 is the street number), “Church on Fire” (no, really), “Souled Out,” “Church on the Rock,” or “Ignited Word” — how about a descriptive name? Please?1
Sure, identity is important, but, that important? How about a name that is going to be of some descriptive use to visitors and outsiders?

heh… this is one of the things that really drives me nuts! Because im in the process of looking for a church, i’ve been to almost 20 churches in 5 months. I get so confused with all the acronyms and strange names for things that run! Especially sunday school or youth group things.
Heh - at Ilam baptist they have this group called C6, (sunday nights at 6, movie and discussion group for uni age people), but i assumed it was some sunday school club cos they always have weird names. The people who run it got all worried that other people might be thinking it was a sunday school club so they’re looking at changing its name to something more meaningful.
Yep. Lets go back to the lazy hazy days of “sunday school”, “youth group” and “students discussion group”.
At my youth group last year we had a cell group for leaders called “solar cell” which i thought was awesome cos here was the perfect opportunity to call it “soular cell” but the youth pastor didn’t go that far. (Yay!)

Define ‘descriptive’. Besides, sunday school’s a name that sounds boring as.
