The Branding Obsession

In

Why is it that you can’t just call it “Sunday School,” or “Children’s Church.” Why do churches expect visitors to know what they mean by “Lions” or “Pathfinders” or “Navigators” or — and perhaps the worst yet — “Little Warriors?”

Or “Sundays @ 7,” “Urban River,” “Church @ 137” (that church is going to have a problem if they ever move; 137 is the street number), “Church on Fire” (no, really), “Souled Out,” “Church on the Rock,” or “Ignited Word” — how about a descriptive name? Please?1

Sure, identity is important, but, that important? How about a name that is going to be of some descriptive use to visitors and outsiders?

Freudian Slips

In

The most common Freudian slip I come across is members of a church worship team using “audience” where they mean “congregation.” What does that say about our churches, and about us?

Any thoughts?
