It takes a very special kind of genius to write a story where Pikachu seems perfectly natural as an animal spirit guide, or where there’s nothing strange about the Archangel Michael flying his robot car (“I don’t like this, Michael,” says EIN) to the Tower of Babel to plant a bomb. It takes an even more special kind of genius to write a story where things like that seem perfectly natural and serious and mythical, and you don’t even blink. I have found that genius.

Here are some I quite enjoyed, with some interesting theological themes:

• An Old Stocking. A gentle fun-poking at religious structures.
• The Contemner. It’s either a Lovecraftian creepy horror, or a parable about “poisonous religion.” Maybe both.
• Unexpected Mystery of the Cold Iron Pope. Computer Geekery meets Medieval Monasticism.

Ouch.
