Civil Unions, Part 2

A list of links to submissions on the Civil Unions Bill.

[Update:] Apparently, of the submissions so far about 95% are against the bill — that means only around 5% for the bill. Of those who have requested to make verbal submissions, 75% are against the bill.

This post discusses a bit more around the bill, and the fact that it’s also about de facto heterosexual couples, a fact many seem to be forgetting.

My stance hasn’t changed (I still support it; or at the least will not fight it), but people have been bringing up some good points, and I do have some issues with what the bill may mean in the future. The main thing is that, while this bill doesn’t address adoption, that’s going to come before long. We may find that fight a whole lot nastier.

Some good arguments: Nato, Michelle and Marcus make some compelling points regarding the “health of our country.

However, my mind hasn’t changed. I do not particularly like the bill, or what it means for my country, but (a) it’s not just about me and (b) the right thing isn’t always the easiest or most pleasant. I’m still internally debating whether or not a small evil is something the “right thingâ€? (see Exodus 1:15–21), but I’m pretty certain that forcing my worldview on others is never the right thing.

i guess its always going to be a difficult issue, Matt :) So dont worry, there are many of us, struggling in the same boat over that to think or do or have an opinion on…

I guess it all comes down to this: what is best for our country. And are the politicians thinking about this? As Marcus said, numerous studies have shown the detrimental effects of defacto or homosexual relationships on children. I remember hearing on Radio Rhema some staggering statistics about effects on boys of not having a father around, and not just a father who is their mothers partener - but someone who is married to their mother.
Apparently a huge number of people who commit crimes come from homes with single or defacto parents.
There are plenty more statistics along these lines, i’d love to get hold of them….
But i am beginning to see the huge effects of non-marriage relationships on society, and am coming to the conclusion that if its the government’s job to preserve a good standard of society, then it must be their job to preserve marriage. =)
